When I got it, I ran five or six pots of straight water through until I could no longer smell the chemical smell others complained about, and then ran a few more just to be safe. I haven't had a problem with it since.
For those that complained the coffee isn't hot enough... You either received a defective maker, or you are insane. I usually put my coffee in the microwave for a bit after brewing, but after this brews I can't even drink it for a few minutes. It is HOT.
I like the autobrew and auto-off features. Both work nicely and the auto-brew is very easy to set up. There were a lot of complaints about the clock not being backlit, but I don't find it to be a problem. It sits ten feet from my oven which has the lit up display, so it isn't a problem for me.
It is a great size. Fits under my cabinets perfectly and doesn't take up much space.
The recommendation for the amount of coffee is ridiculous though... I can't remember what it was, but something like six tablespoons I think. This maker is a five cup pot, but they consider a cup as five ounces. It really makes three coffee cups full, and the first time I made it I followed their directions thinking they'd know better. It was horrible. I use two tablespoons when I fill the pot to the four cup line.
My only complaint is the pot is already broken. I have no idea how it happened, so I am still giving it five starts because maybe somebody bumped it... but I have never broken a coffee pot before and this one suddenly has cracks running all over it. I will probably buy another because I have liked it so much, but if it breaks again I will be getting a different maker...
There are really only two differences between these two machines:
1. This unit has 25% more capacity (water tank and carafe). This is a welcome difference as it seemed with the smaller model it just barely made two cups of coffee, and we almost wanted just a little bit more. With this model it always seems to be the perfect amount for two people in the morning.
2. This unit has a different appearance. The unit itself is more rectangular, a bit larger in size, and has a plasti-chrome finish on the front.
The features of the two coffee makers are otherwise identical.
- They take the same size filter (4-6 cup basket filters fit perfectly, but the #2 cone filters also fit reasonably well)
- They have the exact same buttons/options: on, off, delayed on, set delay, set time
- The water reservoir fills in the same way and the carafe, although larger, is otherwise identical
Pros
- Works like clockwork
- Durable
- Easy to clean
- Makes a reasonably good cup of coffee
Cons
- I've found the new carafe to be a bit problematic. When I pour water or coffee out of it at any reasonable speed, the liquid catches the corner of the plastic carafe lid just over the pour spout. This causes a small stream to flow down the side of the carafe and onto your counter. I saw other reviewers talk about it "leaking" which I assume is this issue. Even though the carafes are otherwise identical except for size, I never had this issue with the smaller model. The only solutions are to pour slower (but you have to pour very slowly to avoid this), or use the thumb switch to flip open the carafe lid as you're pouring. Of course, every third day I forget and end up having to wipe up the counter.
- While the water reservoir is in the same position as the smaller model (behind the basket), I've found that on this model it's harder to pour into and I occasionally miss a bit and end up with water on the countertop. After some observation, I am pretty sure this has to do with the different shape of the unit. The smaller unit has a round lid, and thus when you approach it from the side (as you must based on where the fill area is) it's where the lid cuts back so you have more room and maneuverability with the carafe. With the larger model, the lid is rectangular and thus you have less room and a poor angle of attack.
I am not upset I bought this unit, it just needs a bit more thought when using which isn't always easy first thing in the morning. Between the better, larger size and the watery-countertop downfalls, I feel this model is a push with the smaller unit.
Top reviews from other countries
I only have one coffee a day so a small machine was what I needed. I was using the refillable K-cups but that was making a weak coffee. This machine makes very rich tasting coffee with just slightly more coffee than I used in the K-cup machine. I grind my favourite coffee at home so I always get the brew I want. I grind my coffee for this machine at just below the medium setting on my grinder. Much bigger - less flavour, much smaller the basket fills and sometimes the side of the filter paper collapses and you get bypassing which results in grounds in your coffee cup. I have no problem getting the smaller filters.
One minor irritation that other reviews mention is it dribbles when pouring. To overcome this just open the lid slightly and then there's no issue.
I can't comment on the timer feature as I always unplug it after making my coffee as we have health and safety looking out for rogue machines that represent a fire hazard.
Overall I'm really pleased with this machine and I actually look forwards to arriving at my desk! It's certainly improved my work day.
I’ve had this machine before, I know what it looks like new, and this ain’t it.
Very dissatisfied
práctica la jarra de acero inoxidable, solo toma 3 minutos en estar listo el café, salen aproximadamente 2 tazas grandes con 5 cucharadas cafeteras, definitivamente recomiendo comprar el filtro permanente
