- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2011Size: 12-CupVerified PurchaseI just received this pot after the sudden death of my Farberware Superfast Electric percolator. I moved to a percolator about two years ago when I'd finally had it with the succession of drip makers I'd trashed after only months of working properly. Needless to say, I rediscovered the joy of perked coffee! Your parents/grandparents were right - there's nothing like it! Alas, the Farberware perc lasted less than two years of daily use until the heating element quit (very disappointed in Farberware.) Since the electric percs are pretty expensive relative to their apparent useful life, I decided to retrogress even further and go for a stovetop model this time. Yes, it's a little more work and patience on the stovetop perc. But oh, the coffee, and the unmatchable aroma that fills the kitchen every morning! This is the way to start a day.
I researched pretty extensively for a solid, well-made pot and I'm quite satisfied with this purchase. The pot is heavy duty and will likely last for years if minimal care is taken. I like the glass perc top (although I did buy the Fitz-all replacement top to have on hand, just in case.) It fits well and doesn't leak. I love the fact that there are no plastic parts at all. The outside of the pot is attractive and I actually like the chubby, squat style which fits perfectly on the small burner of my glass-top. The filter basket, cover, and pump are solid and well made. The wooden handle stays cool. Everything is lined up properly. I'm not sure what that one previous negative poster was on about - there is nothing wrong with the quality of the workmanship here. Yes, I would prefer that the pot was made in the U.S. but almost nothing is, these days.
I recommend this pot without reservation. If you buy one just be patient in learning the art. It's not hard and it's worth the trouble. Use water that's fresh and cold. Use enough coffee (preferably coarsely ground, but anything in a pinch) - a Tbs. per cup. I use 4 well rounded coffee scoops (each scoop is 2 Tbs) for the 8 cup mark. Turn your burner on high until you see the first perk (this can take up to ten minutes if you're starting with very cold water.) Then put your burner on low so that a steady perk is maintained but the coffee isn't boiling. I perk for 8 minutes for the 8 cup mark (rule of thumb 1 minute per cup - so 10 min for 10 cups, 12 min for 12, etc.) Like I said, it takes a little more time and if you're the type of person who wants a cup to their lips the minute they stagger out of bed, this type of system is not for you. I've found I can start the pot in the morning, take the dogs out (or take a quick shower) and return in time to turn the pot down. Then it's just a few minutes' wait for the best cup of coffee you'll ever taste.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2014Size: 12-CupVerified PurchaseI got this in the mail the other day. When I was a kid I loved peculator coffee! There's nothing better! This stove top peculator works great! I've read several reviews where people have said it didn't work. There are a few rules you have to use when making coffee this way. It takes longer to brew this way but you will have a better flavor coffee!
So this is what you need to know. Make 6 cups of more of coffee if you are using this 12 cup size percolator. It will work better.
- You need to measure 1 tablespoon of coffee per 8 ounces of water so if you are making 8 cups of coffee you will need about 8 tablespoons (if you don't like your coffee as strong, use less coffee).
- spread your grounds around the bottom of the basket before inserting it into the percolator. This will help the brewing process.
- turn your burner on medium high heat (if you use a gas stove, you need to leave it there to make sure the coffee percolates correctly), if you use an electric stove like I have, turn it on medium high and once you see it begin to percolate, turn the burner down to medium - medium low, this prevents the brewing coffee from burning. (Electric burners hold the heat, where gas obviously will not).
- You must brew your coffee for about 8 minutes. If you like it stronger you can let it go for 10 minutes but NO LONGER! Set a timer when you see the coffee start to percolate to ensure you don't let it go to long.
- Once it is done brewing let the percolator sit with the heat off (electric stove, move it off the hot burner)so the water can drain from the basket.
- You can then remove the basket and keep the pot warm on the stove (on low) or with gas stoves pour the coffee into a carafe to keep it hot.
- PLEASE, please, please, remember this is HOT! Use a hot pad or oven mit when picking up the pot to pour so you don't burn yourself!
Hope these tips help you out if you have one, or are looking to get one. =)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2014Size: 12-CupVerified PurchaseMy husband had a Bunn coffee machine, the 3rd in 13 years. We have hard water and I believe that is why they start leaking from the bottom after a couple of years. He then started using an old Corningwear percolator in the cabinet. He found he the liked the coffee just as well. One day the gasket under the handle came off. I looked at all of the percolators at Amazon and from the comments, chose this one. My husband really likes this one because it is very heavy, good quality stainless. He says it makes a good cup of coffee, I do not drink coffee, yuck. I'm hot tea gal. The negatives of this pot, which I did not see mentioned is that (1 the rivets on the inside of the handle come out, they don't go back in very well ( the handle does snap back on) (2 the glass top is hard to clean because the neck is so narrow (3 the rim inside of the pot is a little sharp, I have to be careful when I wash it. With all of that, it's a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality
Size: 12-CupVerified PurchaseAs described. Seemingly good quality stainless steel (18/8). Haven't used it quite yet. But it seems well constructed. Very happy with purchase.
Additionally, now that I have actually used it. It's great! I may never fill it as I can't drink that much coffee...
Didn't realise it held so much. Will be good if I have people over...

1.0 out of 5 stars total rubbish.
Size: 12-CupVerified Purchase£60 and it didn't last a week. It went in the bin...
Made of crooked tin plate and the glass knob broke within days...
Waited two weeks for delivery, tho I admit I had a few nice cups of coffee out of it...
