I've had the 9-cup version for a couple months now and I absolutely love it. I had bought a 4-cup version while I was living overseas and I gave it to a friend (who really liked it) when I moved back to the US. I wanted an inexpensive larger version but I couldn't find one in stores and was hesitant to buy online. I accidentally bought a tiny 2-cup model first (I didn't realize there were multiple size options); I kept it but I still wanted a large version for when I had company. Long story short, I finally settled on this one and I'm very impressed. It's great quality for such a low price. If you close it correctly, very little steam escapes and it makes a great cup of espresso (or strong coffee) and, as long as you don't over fill it, no coffee grinds escape back into the water chamber. I do have 2 tips- always brew on a medium to low heat; it takes a little longer but the coffee tastes better. 2- double check the size you are ordering and keep in mind these are measured in espresso cups so that 9-cup pot actually brew 2 mugs worth of coffee or 9 tiny shots of espresso. My family loves coffee, in all its forms, my husband and I are big Turkish coffee drinkers but this espresso pot is our second favorite and we use almost daily.
Appeared very good when I was purchasing it. The quality is okay.. gets job done for the price but not good enough! Sorry, this piece is made of very thin metal! I wouldn't buy this one again!!
I am a huge fan of Moka pots and espresso and finally wanted more than just the 6 cup. Stainless is the way to go for me however the prices range from $30 to $50-80 and >$100. I figure I'd give this a shot. Had issues at first as some others mentioned BUT FOLLOW THESE steps below and it WORKS FINE!
**PROS** -9 cups vs. 4-6 cups as others -Easy to use once get the hang -Affordable -Stainless steel vs. Aluminum (personal opinion, you can do your own research on why with a quick search) -9 cups of deliciousness
**CONS** -Thin metal with large capacity = a lot of pressure ensure you follow careful directions -Finicky - you HAVE to get the right grind and DON'T compact the grounds -9 cups so it takes a while to heat up
**HOW TO MAKE IT WORK** I struggled like some other reviewers but didn't give up and tried other methods until I perfected it.
GRIND - Be sure to get espresso grind. To coarse and you won't have molten delicious coffee syrup, to fine and you won't get a good flow and create way too much pressure.
ADDING COFFEE- DO NOT! Do not pack the coffee grinds as you add it. I usually did on the smaller ones or added an extra scoop on top and then when tightening it down it compacted it. If you do that on this, the water won't smoothly go through, steam will leak out the sides and you'll be dissapointed. Just put in the grinds and even it out at the top without tamping/packing it down. Set it on the base and ensure it fits well and screw on the top securely with one extra small twist.
BURNER - I like to place it on high as I don't have time for a lower setting as I did in the past. Once you start to see the first small stream, turn it down to in-between medium high and medium. Then wait and pour when done.
That's it! I struggled with the issues of steam escaping, coffee spilling out the sides, bad grinds etc. just follow that above and this is a great Moka Pot.
I wasn't expecting name brand quality since it's so inexpensive. It is stainless but the metal is very thin. For the money it's OK. It worked on my induction plate so it is steel. The first use I must not have tightened it enough because about three of the nine cups were still in the bottom reservoir after it was spitting and sputtering (usually a sign it's done). Sadly, steam was shooting out the middle. The threads are a little finicky to align at first, but no problem once you get it started. I made sure it was very tight the second time around and all but a little water was left in the bottom. Success!
Pros: - Dirt cheap way to brew good coffee - Works with induction - Nine cups is exactly the right size pot for me. Two regular cups of strong (and I mean very strong) coffee - A 16.9 oz bottle of bottled water fills the tank perfectly. It's a very convenient way to measure water
Cons: - The coffee screen holes are literally larger than the Bialetti. - The coffee doesn't taste as good as with my Bialetti (6 cup). I'll have to keep experimenting with it. It's not bad, but not as strong as with the Bialetti
I should add, be careful with the handle when unscrewing the pot. Don't use the handle to unscrew the two halves, it will break. I'm an expert at breaking plastic things and the handle cannot take a lot of wrenching. Cool the pot under cold running water, then unscrew both ends by grabbing by the metal on each end.
Update 9/9/16: OK, the quality is a lot less than I originally stated. I used it on an induction hot plate tonight, fully tightened, and it still steamed out the side. It's very disappointing. As it brewed, the bottom warped under the heat and popped outward making the pot wobble. So I turned the heat down and everything calmed down. The bottom line is the metal is, as others have commented, is quite thin. After I took the pot off of the burner it cooled and the base audibly popped back (sounded like mason jar lid sealing). I will try it on the induction plate's lowest heat setting and hopefully I'll have better results. I probably just need to find the right amount of heat.
Update 9/30/16: It leaks steam at the center no matter how much you tighten it and the bottom now pops out when I brew a pot. The gasket doesn't seal properly and the metal is just too thin. Not good. I have to take another star :(
Update 11/15/16: This pot has a poor quality/design. The metal is too thin and concave slightly at the bottom. When it heats up the pressure causes and unsettling pop. After the coffee cools it pops back to it's original shape. It's a shame, if it sealed better and if it had a more robust bottom it would be great. I'm not even going to give this to someone. It's going in the trash as I wouldn't wish this pot on anyone!
