Update: I bought this unit in October 2013. It is now October 2024. I have used this machine almost daily. I have run probably 3000 coffees through this little gem. Write this date down - October 21, 2024. This is the day that I descaled it for the FIRST time. It started flashing lights at me, and would not make an espresso for me, so I found the manual on the Illy website and downloaded it. It told me how to descale it. I used baking soda. It took me a while to get my head around the instructions and got it right on the third try, 2 hours later. I would like to note that I only ever use filtered water from the fridge, and guess that is the reason it has been so long for the descaling.
I don't think this one is made anymore, sadly, so I recently bought the Y3.3 to have at work, and it is performing like a trooper with the same capsules.
I like to pull my own espressos with a Breville 15 bar pump machine, which is a process starting with selecting the bean, grinding it just right, measuring and tamping with the right amount of pressure...to get the perfect super strong, black gold and crema without the bitterness of starbucks garbage, and more flavorful than those Kcup dishwater coffees. I guess I'm a coffee snob, but I don't like that label - I just love a good espresso and won't waste my time drinking sub par coffee.
This machine matches my brews and needs perfectly...in fact the espresso is strong enough to give me a momentary buzz and when I close my eyes it takes me back to those dingy little side street cafes in Portugal and Italy that made the best espressos around the world.
If you are looking for true, european espresso, get this machine.
